It's embarrassing, I know. But I am completely obsessed with the show, House, MD. A friend of mine turned me onto the show sometime in November, 2007, after the show was already in its fourth season. It was one of those things where this guy kept trying to tell me how great it was, by trying to re-tell some of the episodes. I have recollections of friends of mine in high school trying to get me to watch Monty Python by re-enacting the coconut clopping scenes of The Holy Grail. Sorry dudes and dudettes, but some things just do not translate well in the retelling! But in spite of my friend's failed re-enactments, I was intrigued enough to try renting it from the local video store. I had some free rentals coming anyway, so I gave it a shot. They didn't have season 1. So I started with Season 2, and by the third episode, I was completely Obsessed with a capital O. Everything from the dialogue to the camera angles had me intrigued. I quickly burned through Seasons 2 and 3 by renting the DVDs, then later bought Season 1 just so I could see it! Within two months, I had also bought Seasons 2 and 3 on DVD as well. Normally, I do not have a very high tolerance for re-watching a movie or TV show, but with House, MD, I find that re-watching always brings up wonderful little nuggets of dialogue and plot that might be missed in the first one or two showings. It took me a long time to realize this, but eventually it dawned on me that the main reason I really like the show is that every episode is wrapped up in a neat little package of a theme with subplots that tie into the theme. Reminds me of the good ol' days of my English Lit classes in college where we would pick apart short stories and novels, peeling away the layers of the onion, reaching down into the depths of the writers' hearts. And now, for the most embarrassing part of all, I also stumbled upon the world of "Fan Fiction." This is fiction in which fans of a TV show or movie then write their own bits of dialogue, scenes, plots, and add characters and so forth. There are entire websites dedicated to this peculiar artform. I vaguely knew that it went on for things like Star Trek and Star Wars, but those people are, um, well, "special." Little did I know that there were people out there still writing episodes for Moonlighting! Which now that I think about it, was actually the very first fanfic I ever wrote . . . my own version of how to deal with the mess of Maddie and David sleeping together. But that would deserve its own pages. Back to House, MD. So, without further ado, here is some reading for your amusement. Don't tell me to go get a life, I know I need one. |
