Meetup.com

Way way way way way back in 2002, after my ex and I split up, I spent some time "hanging out" on the internet. I became somewhat obsessed with some user forums and chat rooms and such, and in general really enjoyed having an outlet to write, argue, discuss, speculate, etc.

I probably spent almost a year making this a pretty major hobby, along with some home improvement projects like remodeling my bedroom and so forth. And then one day, one of these people whom I felt I "knew" pretty well, and enjoyed chatting with, decided to make a special announcement to the rest of the user forum. What she did was to post the images of her ultrasound, in order to announce that she was a two months pregnant.

Now, I know that she meant well, but in fact what that did to me was force me to realize that I was NEVER going to meet these people in person. It was "fun" to chat with them online, but there was a huge element of the human component completely missing from our interactions.

From that day forward, I dropped many of my online obsessions like a hot potato, and turned to doing volunteer work and other things that could help me get out in the general public and meet other people.

And then I found Meetup. It was a wonderful mix of the two concepts - turning the Internet into a TOOL to enable people to meet each other face-to-face.

If you've never been to Meetup.com, then do not delay one more second, go visit it today.
